I worked at The Sharper Image when I was younger and we were required to shake hands with customers. It wasn't a stated RULE, however, it was strongly suggested. Of course, this is a higher end store.
I can understand the motive of an employer looking to try this strategy. They are looking to build relationships with their customers and are hoping to do this directly through you.
If you feel uncomfortable with this, you only have 2 choices: bring along some anti-bacterial hand gel and suck it up, or find a job that suits you better.

Yes, In deed. a sales associate shook my hand. It was the first time though, it happened when i go to big stores. give or taking a shake is not a contagious deseases it represent that the person was satisfied or wanting to know you better or he is greatfully satisfied doing business with you. Unless there's an attitude problem. but there are few thing to the exeptions specially if your a single person.if this is not working on your side , I think it is better to change your job decently and to avoid hurtings someone feelings, there are people knows how to feel a real shake hand even a fake smile.

I have had to shake hands with many people. Primarily in sales of big ticket items. When I go to buy a car, furniture, computer equipment, etc. I don't think it is that uncommon. I don't have that problem in low to medium scale department stores. Only upscale stores with higher priced things. If you don't like it then you definitely need to change jobs. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Some businesses may require you to shake hands with the potential client as a greeting or to "seal" a purchase. If you're not comfortable with it, talk to you manager or supervisor to see if there is any way to get around shaking hands with customers. If not, you may want to look at finding a new job if you don't feel comfortable shaking hands with the customers.

That's rediculus that you'd leave. Having the person shake your hand creates a proffessional atmosphere and makes the customer feel important. Don't think of it as them being introduced to you, it's just a job.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I think that customer service is a lost art form in this day and age. It is too easy to park yourself behind a cash register, and not deal with customers.
I will go out of my way to shop somewhere that remembers what a personal greeting means.
If you are not comfortable with the new rules, then you should find a position somewhere else. (Try Walmart, they have NO customer service skills / contact)

I don't agree with it either, I think it's gross. You would have to wash your hands every 5 minutes. You have no idea what people touch and all the germs they carry. I even avoid shaking people's hands in church for this reason. Yuk!

If you are uncomfortable, then leave. Your store is weird.
