I have a 1989 Chevy Silverado. The interior light that tells me that my parking brake is on won't turn off, even though my brake is off.

What could be wrong? Please no lame answers like "take it to a mechanic."

I added brake fluid. It was about 25% low. The light is still on.

I think if you are low on break fluid it will come on, check the brake fluid reservoir

You may need a brake job. There is a sensor that is on the brake system proportioning valve. When the front brake pads wear the fluid will go down in the reservoir adding fluid will not do it. When the pads are replaced the pistons in the calipers have to be sqeezed back in. This reverses the fluid back into the reservoir. This also causes the sensor to reset. If not some have a manual reset on the proportioning valve. The sensor can get out of whack so to speak. The best way to get it back is to bleed the brakes. If bleeding the brakes at the front does not reset it then try the rear brakes. Bleeding the brakes causes the centering internally of the proportioning valve and the light will go out.

Try pulling on the brake pedal itself to make sure it is fully released and engaging the switch, you might have to pull on the release and the pedal at the same time. If it is fully released and engaging the switch it could be a faulty switch. There is really nothing else involved in that system. It has nothing to do with brake fluid. The e brake is fully mechanical. 1 pedal assembly, 1 cable, 1 switch to activate the light. The only other possible but not likely problem would be a short somewhere in the wiring. Try the suggestions and see what happens.

Probably one of two things. Either your brake fluid resevor is low or your parking brake is not fully disengaging when you pull the release lever. You might have to lift the pedal up while you hold the release lever.

your brake fluid is probably low, if it gets low you brake light will stay on until you refill your master cylinder.
