Pony up the cash for a prep class is probably your best bet. I used a company called Testmasters (you can google it, or I believe it is testmasters.com) for my LSAT (which I chose to take after I bombed my GMAT without having taken a class). Yes, it costs money. Yes, it takes time. However, the value of these classes is that they not only teach you the material, they also teach you how to take the test. The more prepared you are the less worried you will be. You need to be confident taking this exam otherwise you are going to will bomb it (trust me).

Look at the money spent like an investment: the better you do, the better the school you will be able to get into. The better the school, the better your job prospects. The better the job, the better the money. Paying for a better score is like investing in Microsoft in the 80's: you can't go wrong.

Nom amount of books can help alleviate this fear. Its about your confidence and your attitude towards the exam. There is no "failing in GMAT". GMAT can be taken 2, 3, 4 times ..... so what have you gotta loose? Ofcorse a bit of money, but money is not important, your dreams are. So think of it this way, you have got nothing to loose, but if you shake of the fear, you will have better (this is true for any exam) chances of scoring well.

Practice a lot of full length tests and adjust to the 4 hrs of test. Keep scoring consistently, that will also give you boost.

take some practice Gmat exams, lots of practice exams. You just search GMAT on Amazon or eBay, or even at the local library, see what comes up. (some are on cd rom these days.)
