Well every individual is unique of course, but there have been plenty of great physicists.

Most theoretical physicists would actually rank Paul Dirac's relativistic QM theory over relativity as the greatest theoretical achievement of modern physics.

I think that a lot of the reason is that there are so many physicists today that few stand out enough to capture the public imagination. Richard Feynman is probably the one who has come the closest.

Einstein was a brilliant man but there have been many people equally as brilliant in their individual fields. Einstein's name has just become slang in our culture for intelligence.

That's like the brand name Kleenex has become slang for a facial tissue. There are plenty of other facial tissues out there - they just aren't as well known as Kleenex.

It's more a matter of popularity than intelligence.

There has been thousands of brilliant people in history, just a brilliant if not better than Einstein.
A lot of the time it is down to their followers to celebrate them.
One of the most brilliant people in the UK was Robert Hooke, unfortunately his great rival Newton succeeded him and buried his work, they even managed to lose his body, only now is Hooke being celebrated for the Genius that he was.
