C'mon Andy, what makes you think you need to do that??? That's a drastic step unless you have a specific overwhelming reason to do so.

Not only do you lose everything, files, settings, preferences, etc., but you invest lots of time reinstalling printers and other stuff.

What's the problem ?

It does sound a bit drastic, is the computer booting up, if so back up everything on it documents music the lot. If you are running XP after the back up boot up with your XP disc in the drive, it should give you the option to repair a Windows installation. Try this first and you should find your data is safe and your settings retained. If that does not work then i am afraid you will have to do a complete reinstall. Good Luck.

Formatting will clear everything you have on the hard drive so if you need to format, first of all save all the files you need keeping. . This can be done by copying them to a cd . backing up to a second hard drive, or if you have a very large hard drive divide it into two partitions c drive and e drive use C: to store your os and software and use D: for your personal stuff that way when you format you keep your files or get an external hd and save to that
