I'm a commercial real estate credit analyst, looking to make a little more money on the side. I wanted to start a small business, so I've come up with some that I enjoy doing... ORGANIZING. I live in Naples, FL... where there is A LOT of disposable income. I'd like my service to include organizing closets, garages, and also moving (packing and unpacking to help out the older folk here). I plan to give free estimates to potential clients and feel this will be an easy and fun way to make money... working on my own, with few overhead costs (only supplies and travel) What do you think? If you were a millionaire, would you pay someone $500 to organize your garage? Thanks for you thoughts! :)

I am studying to do the same thing. There is sooooo much opportunity as many people have busy lives now and need help organizing their homes. I just finished a class that was taught by a PO (professional organizer) and she has only been in business about a year and has had a pretty steady stream of clients. There is also TONS of information on the web that you can collect for free to learn tips and tricks of the trade. Also, there is a forum on www.getorganizednow as well as a good book you can buy about becoming a PO.

Best of luck to you!

That could work if there is a need and want for that service in your area. Remember the old busines motto: Suppy vs. Demand

You'll need to be very meticulous about how you do things. The person's wants as far as organizing, keeping stuff, etc. I'd recommend getting insured and keeping meticulous notes as far as what was arranged, kept, gotten rid of, etc. You don't want to get accused of stealing something or to get sued if you break something valuable of theirs by accident. Some of the stuff you might be able to sell for them or show them how they can save money by donating it to some charitable organization.

I would be leary about doing work while the person isn't home. It would be easy for them to accuse you of stealing if they weren't home.

And like the one person mentioned, some rich folk are the biggest bunch of tightwads and complainers you will ever meet. Don't look solely to rich people. Many cab drivers will tell you that a poor person often will give you a bigger tip than a rich person will. Many of the people who got rich by earning there money didn't get rich by being a big spender, but by being a penny pincher.

I would probably hire my kids friends to do it which would cost me like 20 bucks. A lot of older people would have the kids and grandchildren do it and may not have all the much money to spend on that kind of thing and most older people that i know would not like the idea of leaving there home / moving. I am NO where close to being a millionaire but i think that most of them already have maids but who knows its worth a try right.

Careful.....you will find that millionaires (and I know two families in Naples by the way who are) are a very picky, tight wad, snooty bunch, particularly older ones. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I would dearly like to be one too.....

But....you might find that they are NEVER satisfied with your organization, will be in your way every minute, and never feel you have finished the job....you may have a hell of a time collecting.....and maybe not feel 500.00 was worth the greif.....
Good luck, you are creative, but you are sticking your chin out on this one......

interesting. I suppose this service would iclude cleaning my garage too? I don;t think I would pay someone $500 to do it though but then again i am not a millionaire, and if I were I would have someone who would constintly keep it clean and organized for me.

I suppose I would pay someone a few bucks like $50 or something to clean and organize my garage.
