An obsession is a persistant thought. I do not believe that the concepts of obsession and desire are necessarily interrelated. Meaning, indeed, if you want something, you could obsessed about it; but frequently, you could find yourself obsessing over something that you don't necessarily want. Take people with OCD, for example. The obsession is the thought, and the compulsion is the acting on the thought. So, the obsession about having dirty hands is acted upon by the compulsive washing of hands. It takes people a lot of work in therapy to combat this disorder -- which brings us back to your question -- I highly doubt that all that work in therapy would be done if people with OCD wanted to continuously wash their hands. Essentially, they are having an obsession about something that they do not want. I believe that the same could be true for non-OCD people as well.

One can be obsessed with anyone/anything. They may start out being quite attracted to this person or thing--but then it gets out of control--might by then be unwanted.
Check out people who like the fun of gambling--and then get hooked, lose their home, family, and everything else of importance to them. Same holds true for drugs and alcohol--a lot of fun in the beginning--then it gets to be an addiction.
One can be attracted to, or even in love with, a person. After a while, they start to think that they cannot live without that person--and that if that person wants to leave them--they'd rather see them dead than just gone.

When you are obsessed with something you are more emotionally attached to it. There is little or no intelligence involved in that. Therefore you may end up unhappy or unfulfilled one day when you gain your wits back. So the answer is Yes.it can very well be an unwanted attraction.
