(1) In the 1980s, black family income rose higher than white family income in the US.
(2) Real median family income rose in seven of the eight years of the Reagan administration, after having declined dramatically in 1979 and 1980.
(3) Between 1979 and 1989 the real median household income of all income "quintiles" (fifths of the population) grew.
(4) A household in the "bottom 20%" by income in 1979 was more likely to make it to the top 20% by 1989 than to still be in the bottom 20%.
(5) The 'declining middle class' refers to the decline in SIZE of the middle class relative to the whole population, due to an exodus of households from the middle class. This exodus breaks down as follows: 92% moving UP, 8% moving down. This breakdown is fairly consistent over the last 25 years, and this explains why there are more affluent households both in number and in proportion to the whole. While the rich are richer, there are also a lot more rich people, as the non-rich move up.
