assuming that there IS room on the psx card, you need to have the psx card in slot 1 for many games.
for example, final fantasy tactics will not know that there is a save card in slot two of the ps2 (or the old ps, believe it or not) if slot 1 is empty
just so, if the ps2 has a ps2 card in slot 1, you can't save on most psx games.

That's rather odd. My PS2 reads my old memory cards, or at least it used to I haven't tried it lately. You might just have a bad memory card that doesn't work. You can't save to a PS2 memory card though(you could transfer saves from the memory card to a PS2 memory card but still can't load it or play it that way. Unless they changed something with the slim model you CAN'T SAVE PS1 games to a PS2 card. I will agree with the one person though to make sure you are using slot 1. I think it messes it up when it tries to read slot 1 first and gets the wrong card, confuses the thing.

I had my PS2 card first so, when I got a PS1 card, I just stuck it in. It wouldn't let me save either, so I tried switching the cards, PS1 card in the 1st slot, PS2 in the second. I was able to play and save all my PS1 games after that.

I've been having the same problem. Fortunately, I'm lucky (or unlucky) enough to have one of those fat PS2's AND a slim one. I started playing my good old FF7, then the memory card didn't get picked up, like what happened to you. I switched it over to my whale PS2, and it worked. It seems the slims just have the problem. All you can really do is use a PS1 or fat PS2.
...you're not the only one suffering

Sorry you have to get a ps2 memory card for your ps2 system. Mine wouldn't work either, once I got the ps2 card, I could play my ps1 games and save them onto the ps2 card

I'm pretty sure the memory card should work. But the PS1 card only works with PS1 games.
