People call, bully and victimise people just because they are "ginger", using the word as a derogatory term, to make a minority group feel victimised. I mean you don't see the majority of people speaking to someone with such disrespect just because of the colour of their skin, so why should people be rudely spoken to and pinpointed just because of the colour of their hair..
Im fed up of this form of racism, and more so fed up of the media trying to glamourise calling people with "ginger" hair and making a joke out of it.
And don't start having a go at me for making a very serious point, I would be seen as some one with "ginger" hair and yes sometimes i do get abuse for the colour of my hair, and its something i could simply do with out as i dont deserve it..
put yourself in the situation of walking down the street, and for no reason but the colour of your hair some n*bb head decides to shout a derogatory term out to you..
what do you think?

and yeah its simple to say "oh just ignore them" or "see the funny side of it" when you get it through out your life, you can't keep retelling the same joke and expect to find it funny after the 100th time of hearing it..

I feel you. I am a genetic light blond and have been harrased and abused all of my 35 years for it. I have been called albino, ghost, blondie, casper, dumb (by complete strangers I have never seen before - I'm actually identified gifted), and easy (ditto - and I'm actually very conservative sexually) just because of the color of my hair. I have heard every single blond joke out there and it's not funny, it's racist. If it's not OK to call someone racist or derogatory terms due to the color of their skin, it shouldn't be for hair. Natural hair color is a racial feature. A while back some contact lens company used the phrase "my eyes are the color of....mud?" in a commercial pushing colored contact lenses. They got in huuuuuge trouble because that remark was considered racist.

I find that pointing out to the offender that hair color is racial and they are commiting a racial slur and hate crime and you do not care what racists think serves to shut most of them up. Either they don't realize they are racist and stop to think or they know they are racist and are not capable of rational thought. I definitely feel you. Maybe if more of us with the more maligned racial hair colors spoke up and complained, we can spread the word and put a slowdown on it.

Sorry I'm from the States and have never heard the term. All I know is ginger the spice and that my girlfriend's nickname is Ginger. But racism on any level is ignorance. I have had many good black friends, yet I witnessed a crime committed by a black on a black. That does not make all blacks bad, just the guys like that who did the crime. In your case you did nothing at all.

By the way, what's wrong with your hair color? Sounds lovely to me. In history when tribes would migrate or go on raids, it was usually the woman in the conquered group who had the most unusual/rare hair color that was the most prized for a wife. Maybe they're just jealous. Also it is possible that in today's world the more rare hair colors are disappearing due to cross-national marriage, so all that will be left eventually will be the same color - like in China - how boring!

Vive la difference!

It isn't really a race issue, but it's definitely about prejudice. It seems acceptable for anyone to make a comment about red hair and If I had red hair, I don't think I'd see the funny side.

I don't know what ginger means. I assume you are from the UK or Australia where that term is a familiar one.

I use Ginger to describe red heads. I had no idea it was used as a slur. i thought it was like saying blonde. sorry. didn't know.
