I live in Austin, TX at my moms house, not a huge fan of Austin or living with my mom. I work at a job I hate that is deadend and low paying. Im thinking of moving to New York, hopefully I could make more? I have another job interview today here that would be for a higher paying job though...

Life has taught me that when you are unhappy with the circumstances you live in - the only thing that can make them better is to change what is making you unhappy.

I lived about 1,200 miles from home for 5 years and I think it was good for me. It was also challenging. Life changes a great deal when you move out of your parents house and you are on your own for car payments, groceries and rent.

Just keep in mind that even though the job in New York will pay more - the cost of living there is much higher than in Texas. Therefore you may not really be making more money.

That said, if nothing is holding you where you are and you think it's time for a change - go for it. Nothing will change unless you make it happen.

Moving across country to a city where you have not lived before is a big decision. The cost of living in New York is very expensive, even if you live in the suburbs and commute in. And to move from Austin TX to New York is a huge change. Maybe you should plan a trip there for a week or two (find a place to stay like a Residence Inn or something) and see if you like it. Things are very different when you live and work in a city rather than on vacation there. See what housing costs are, grocery's, public transportation system, it may change your mind.

Keep in mind that in Texas there are no state income taxes that come out of your pay check. In New York they have state income tax and even city taxes in some cases so your paycheck will be very affected.

Maybe you should consider moving to Dallas or Houston first to see if you like moving away. Still close enough to family that you can visit, but on your own.

Sounds like you're pretty dissatisfied with your life in general, so sure, why not shake it up a bit? Here's the best advice I can give you though, never just LEAVE something, always go TO something. If you "run away" hoping things will magically improve, chances are, they won't. So, do some research on where you'd like to move to. Spend a little time there. Line up a job you're excited about going to. Take into account the cost of living wherever you're going. In NY, for example, you'd need to make more just to stay where you're at financially because of the cost of living. Look at this as an exciting adventure, but do some planning and give it some pre-thought. Have a ball.

How old are you? Do you have any money saved up? I would look a little more into this prospect before acting on it. New York is a very expensive place to live. If I were you, I would definitely try for this higher paying job. If you're living with you mom (yeah, I know that kinda sucks) at least you don't have to pay rent, and you can save up a lot of money to follow your dreams. I learned the hard way, that sometimes you have to do what you don't want in order to get what you do want. Good luck to you!

if you can secure a higher paying job with benefits and the potential for promotions you should go there, but not until you know you can find a place to live and you can afford the rent.
New York is an exceedingly expensive place to live. you will make more money, but everything you buy is more expensive as well, so really it would be about the same. you may want to think about other cities, or places near cities from which you can commute.

You will defiantly make more money in N.Y than in Austin but make sure you have a plan. NY is more expensive than Austin. The rent is something 1500 to 2000 for a one bedroom in Manhattan. If you got someone to live with it's cool. or maybe try to get a roomate when you get there. Dead End jobs are defiantly not good. NY there more opportunity and more resources not to mention great shopping. Follow you heart it's either now or never!!

Moving may seem like a good idea, but...
here are some things to think about:
1) learning the "new" layout for things like groceries, and laundry

2) Changing you drivers license, car registration, insurance

3) the job may pay more, but what of the cost of living. ie. food, rent and/or living expense

4) TAXES they are sooooo different in Texas then N.Y.

5) HUGE culture difference.

6) and finally starting over with no friends or relatives and having to build relationships.

Think this through before you go.

If you're only leaving for the money, you'll never be happy.

Look for something that excites you....a place where you can work with people your own age, etc...

Remember, employers look for candidates that are working rather then candidates that are unemployed looking for work.

New York is great, however find a job before you move there.

What have you got to lose (apart from a potential job - these exist in New York too, and they also pay more than your current job)? If it doesn't work out in NY, or if it turns out you don't like it, you can always move back home...

one of my friends has moved to NY, and i heard the city was so unique & multi-cultured. if you leave from your mom's house, you could be independent to live on your own.

there would be a lot of possibilities, and that would open up the possibilities of getting a better job.

i think you can start researching the city, jobs, & industries at first whether or not you will go.
