For my Lit. class, I have an essay type project...I'm writing a journal in the perspective of Hester Prynne. All I really need to know is the year/years of all that took place (within the book itself).

The book takes place in the 1640s. No specific dates are mentioned, but there are a few tell-tale hints that have helped scholars over the years window it down to that decade.

I think there are a few veiled references to the pilgrims landing at Plymouth, the rise of Puritan influence and the formation of the colonies. This helped give a loose historical backdrop to the events surrounding Hyster Prynne.

The first site i listed may save you time as you can actually search text in the book to find information. That is neat it can save you time instead of skimming through the book. The second is more indepth going into plot summarys, climax and such. i was not able find anything more specific than the 17th century. Sorry hope the rest helps. Good luck, i saw the first blak and white silent film and it was good. i imagine the book is better.

It was the Puritan period of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, (middle 1600s) but no actual year is given that I remember.
