good ol' chicken noodle soup. :) it actually helps with colds. other than that. something like a sudafed cold, or if you are coughing and you have mucous or something, a decongestant can work.

I think everyone has a favorite "cure" for colds, and of course anything that eases the annoying symptoms is wonderful. Unfortunately, colds do have to run their course, and rest and fluids (especially hot fluids) make me more comfortable. I do believe in the (homemade) chicken soup theory, but since I don't feel like cooking when I'm ill, I think this only works if a wonderful person makes some for you! I like making and drinking hot honey lemonade with fresh lemons--sometimes I add a dash of cayenne pepper to clear the sinuses. This doesn't taste as bad as it sounds. However, what really works for me is zinc. I work with children, and they are walking germ factories. I used to get horrible colds every month, and they lasted 2 weeks! My husband (a medical researcher) said zinc boosts immunity, and I decided to try it. It really did seem to work; I had far fewer colds and they didn't last as long. Now, I rarely get colds, but if I do feel one coming on, I take 50 mg. of zinc right away, once or twice a day. I don't take it with anything with vitamin C (apparently they cancel each other out), but I do take it with other food and I don't take more than 30 or 50 mg. as that can upset my stomach. This really does seem to keep the cold away or at least make it a milder cold of shorter duration. I try to avoid colds altogether by washing my hands often, and eating a good, balanced diet with plenty of water, fresh fruit and veggies. I never get as much rest as I should, though--I really need to work on that. So I always try to keep some zinc tablets around. Oh--it might be a good idea to take some zinc if you're flying anywhere, and bring some antiseptic wipes for the armrests/buttons and tray tables (and your hands.) Airplanes are germ factories, too! Added note: I would advocate checking with a doctor before giving zinc to children; an adult dose might not be good for a child.

Ok, I'm going to give you the str8 dope and it ain't pretty. First of all chicken soup only help w/ a cold if it is made by scratch. Something in the marrow works as a natural anti biotic. Can soups won't work. Second. If you really want to get better fast eat raw garlic. I swear this burns and your breath will stink but it will get rid of the cold. Also raw onions but the garlic is the best. It also is a natural anti biotic. Have someone make you chicken soup with the bones left in and quickly chew and down some raw garlic. I promise it works.

Colds are annoying but you can get pretty quick relief from the following:
1) Elderberry syrup (sometimes goes under the brand name of Sambucol.) The elderberry ingredient (which you can also take as a tincture and should work equally well) has been proven in laboratory tests to kill 97% of virus germs. Most people who take elderberry begin to find relief from their symptoms within 24 hours.
2) Grapefruit seed extract. This usually comes in a clear, thick syrup that is extremely bitter -- best taken in a glass of sweet fruit juice where you can "disguise" the taste. But it also has proven to kill viruses fast.
3) Xlear is a nasal spray that contains xylitol and grapefruit seed extract; it helps keep your nasal passages and throat clear of viruses and other germs.
4) Lemon juice in hot tea, or lemon juice and shaved fresh ginger root, help to cut down the mucous production.
If you combine as many of the above as possible, you can speed your way through the common cold much faster -- but be sure to get enough rest too.

Not much. There are cold meds that can treat the symptoms and some that claim to cut the duration of a cold in half. That last one is loaded with Vitamin C, something that most of us don't get enough of. Once you get a cold, it usually has to run it's course. Recommendation, get one of the cold meds that treat the symptoms so you can feel better, drink lots of water (to keep you flushed out and hydrated) and take a Vitamin C supplement. I take 1000 iu of Vitamin C everyday and haven't had a cold in over 20 years.

Airborne, zinc lozenges and nasal spray, esberitox all help shorten the length of the cold.
A humidifier and drinking lots of liquids loosens nasal secretions.
Vicks Nightime Cold Medicine helps symptomatically at night and Vicks Daytime helps in the day.

A very good cough syrup is awful tasting but it works. One small bottle raw honey, one med onion chopped and one clove garlic minced pour the honey over the chopped onion and minced garlic let set over night then strain and take one tablespoon every 4 hours or as needed.Chicken soup, and zink.

In my past honey and lemon + fruits of any kind as food worked as charmed. Any type of cold. An aspirine for fever would be also a plus.

VIt C, green tea, garlic and ginger soup (the stock being onions and potatoes, carrots etc. This soup will burn that cold up in a hurry! go easy on the ginger, only one third of a root in the pot.
Some recommend eating raw garlic (if you can stand it!)
