Can I use one kind for both without missing out on any essential nutrients?

For leafy plants you want a fertilizer that's high in nitrogen. For flowering plants you want a fert that's high in phosphorous. If you want to use one fertilizer for both I'd try something like Miracle-Grow (20-20-20). It has all the macro- and micronutrients a plant needs. However if you put too much nitrogen on a flowering plant you may force it to push vegetation (leaves) at the expense of flowers. I think if you're wanting really nice flowers you should get a Bloom Booster fertilizer with lower N and higher P (like 10-50-10 for example). Different companies make different formulations.

Basically yes as there is nitrogen phosphorus and potassium.

Nitrogen is for the green parts, (Leaves) phosphorus is for the colour (Flowers) and the potassium is for the roots.

It is in the order of the numerical system that identifies what kind of fertilizer you have.
