What happens is the camera at the toll booth snaps a picture of your license plate, then the owner of the vehicle gets a letter asking if you have a defense and to pay the toll. If you don't pay and explain yourself then they issue a summons and you go to court and pay a BIG fine (compared to paying the toll) for toll evasion. It used to be that they didn't even give you a chance to pay it, just a summons and fine. I live in the toll capital of the country, NJ and if, say you got in the easy pass lane without an easy pass, by mistake, of course, you can pay at the next toll booth. You just tell the toll booth collector what happened, you pay the toll and he/she gives you a receipt for a "missed" toll. Then if you get a letter you just show them your receipt and everything's cool...until the next time.

You will get a ticket in the mail. They usually have toll booths you can pay with cash or a credit card.

In MD, they scan your liscence plates and send you a fine. Usually, the original toll amount is due, if you don't pay then they add $15.00 to that fine.
