I am looking for something that maybe plugs into a USB port that will light an LED or show a short LCD message when a new email arrives so I don't have to keep turning my monitor on and off. Any ideas?

Not sure of anything that will visually enable you to know you have an email. You can always enable sound alerts with most email applications.

Just turn on your sound. Use a gentle music file that is not overly loud but, one that will let you know you have mail. The you do not need anything real fancy as you already have that.

turn the sound on your computer and change the notify in email so that it makes a sound on new mail - simpliest way
