i'd say it depends on the situation. if they are chatting online and don't want to spell everything out then i don't think it's that fruity, same thing with some other words like "sitch" instead of "situation" and many other abbr.
however if he says it in everyday conversation, then yeah, i can see that as being a bit fruity.

verbally, yes. to type it saves me 27 seconds as opposed to the extra 4 letters.
i had to type a "Z" this morning and it took me 90 seconds to find it.
