How much on average should a six month old eat solid food in one sitting? I know every baby is different and everybody starts at different ages but I just want to get an idea of how much is too much or is there a thing of too much? Should I let my 6mo old son eat the baby food until he is full or should there be a limit? I'm asking this question because he just ate 2 tubs of 3.5oz gerber baby food! With a little oatmeal added. I usually just give him one but decided to let him keep eating because he wanted to. I'm a first time mom and I'm sure I'll end up figuring this out on my own but just wanted to get advise from experienced moms. And yes I'll eventually ask his doc but in the meantime any help will be appreciated......Thanks, also we started introducing at 4 mo but he really didn't get eager or get the hang of it until 5mo (I gave him a couple of weeks then tried again)

Oh I feel so much better now! Thanks to everyone so far! I haven't decreased his formula as I know that's his main supply of nutrition. I do agree that he may be having a growth spurt because he's been very hyper lately, more active then usual anyway......

I think that if you just give 3.5 and then offer milk that is a good sized meal. You do not want to over stuff the little one.

As long as you are feeding breastmilk/formula first and only supplimenting with solids, you are doing fine. The liquids have much more nutrition that the solids. And you should be using rice cereal. At 6 months, I had just started solids with baby #4 so she was eating cereal 2xs a day, and only a few spoonfuls at each feeding. That amount increased every few days. With the amount of food you described, it sounds like you may want to give more formula/breastmilk before increasing the solids. 7 ounces of food sounds a bit much, but on the other hand, if he has been eating solids for a month now and you haven't decreased the liquid amounts, he may just be a healthy eater. Keep doing what you are doing. All babies are different.

My son's ped gave me a sheet with how much a baby should be eating a month. Give or take some babies are different. Some may start early or late on things. It says at 5-6 months a baby should be on 2-6 tbsp of cereal, 2-3 ozs of juice, 2-6 tbsp of strained fruits, and 2-8 tbsp of strained veggies.I def. would run it by his ped. 1st though since every baby is different. Also remember if the baby doesn't like a certain food, give it a few weeks and try again he may love it at another time! Remember too one food at a time for a week just in case he may have allergies!! Good luck with your son!!

As mom to 3, I'd say the little love is eating just right. He will let you know if it's too much or not enough. At 6 months he's more active and uses up more of the food given to him. Let him get his fill then he won't wake up through the night hungry and he'll be getting all the vitamins and nutrients he needs for the day.

He'll let you know when he's not hungry, until then you should feed him when he is until he's not. More likely than not he's going through a growth spurt. Of course if he continues to eat what seems like an awful lot, and then doesn't get as tall as he is wide, then it is of course something to bring up with the doc, but honestly? Feed him until he's full. It will make for healthier eating habits later on...

Generally, babies won't eat if they're not hungry, so he'll let you know when he's full. He might be starting to hit a growth spurt, so it'll feel like he's a bottomless pit for a week or so, but then slow down. Follow his cues and everything should be ok! =)

I give my daughter anything that she wants to eat when she was six months old she could drink out of a cup like me and u she eats until she's full its okay because after the full belly they go straight to sleep, I see no harm in you feeding your baby twice as much as usual. would u rather him not eat?

I usually just let my kids eat until they were full. Neither one of them ended up being overweight. Babys will let you know when they are full. Listen to your insticts, don't always go by the books and doctors. Good Luck!!

That's a good question...

I personally thing that you should just let him eat...My son's appetite varies from day to day...sometimes he eats three bites and sometimes he eats the whole jar...

I dont think it's anything to be alarmed about...if he wasn't hungry ...he won't take it.
