Well I don't play guitar but I decided to learn so I brought an old acoustic one from a guy at work.. it was missing a few strings so I bought some new ones. However when I put them on and tried to tune it they started snapping before I could get them tight enough. What am I doing wrong, as I don't want to lose an eye? :)

If the guitars been in the cold (like a garage) and you bring it into the warm the strings will weaken and they will snap more easily, this works other way round too, there are lots of different reasons, mine broke because i tightened the strings too much and the first time i tryed it i snapped them because i put them in wrong, try a different make of guitar string as it does make a difference, i play electric so i don't know how to restring an acoustic but if you search for how to do it on the interent i'm sure you;ll find how
hope that helps :)

Yah, sounds like they're too tight. Buy a tuner and tune the guitar that way. If it were an electric guitar I'd tell ya to check the bridge saddles. If they have sharp edges that would break the strings too.

GEEZ...didn't know playing a guitar could be dangerous unless one's pub had no chicken wire protection for the band from flying beer bottles!

I had the same problem with thin little E strings...trick is NOT to overtighten them...

And over-tightening the large ones will pull the neck loose from the base...

like everyone else said, you're probably tightening them too much. go for a better quality of string and use a tuner when you're putting them on.The ones i use are colour cordinated so you can't mix them up.
Some music shops will replace them for you for the cost of the strings and a small fee. This might be a better option while you're still learning.
good luck!

how tight do you want them?

think you need to learn more about how a guitar should sound when tuned, sounds like you are going too tight.

your tightening to much theres no way they would just snap unless your saddle is made out of a razor blade. you stated you dont play guitar so let someone string and tune it who does

i have friends who are all in bands and play all different guitars the main problem would be over tightening or your just playing to hard man,

so potentially you've got it overstrung? or you may be using the wrong strings on the wrong notes. I also used to find i had problems with cheap guitar strings.
