There are a few different possiblities.

1. You do not have the power cable plugged in or you have the cable plugged in the wrong way. Most newer cables have tabs to prevent you from doing this.

2. The cable is bad. Try a new cable.

3.Your hard drive is bad. To isolate this, try it on another computer with a different cable.

4. The controller is bad. You could go out and buy a new drive controller to put into your pci slot. But you would be better off just buying a new motherboard.

A virus would NOT cause the drive to not be detected. A virus is completely software related. The issue you are having is a hardware issue.
