The DUP are a larger party than the UUP. It was formed in 1971 by Ian Paisley and Desmond Boal. It's members are extreme loyalists and are hard line unionists who support the maintenance of Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom.

The UUP is an older party formed in 1905 and up until recently was the dominant party in Northern Ireland. Traditionally it had strong connections to the Protestant Orange Order and the Apprentice Boys of Derry. They have less extreme unionist views than the DUP and are similar to Conservative Party in Britain with whom they were affiliated until the mid 80's when they disagreed over the Anglo-Irish Agreement. They support the restoration of the Stormont Assembly.

In policies on day to day issues such as water charges, rates, health and education there aren't any major differences between the DUP and UUP

The DUP is the democratic Unionist Party, and the UUP is the Ulster Unionist Party. I'm not sure how different they are.
