As a past high school and college cheerleader, I can definitely say that this is a sport.
Never in my life have I worked so hard to achieve what others seem as so "little". It really hurts our feelings to think that poeple believe we are only there as a show piece.
If they only knew the regiment that we go through everyday to be good at what we do. The weight lifting, the pilates, the stretching...not to mention the running and endurance training. And then we come to competitions....HELLO?????
Let's see someone who says that this is not a sport do a roundoff, handspring, back tuck ...and that is just a starting point! Forget the jumps...they couldn't even fathom how to prep them.
Let's also see if that person can engage a crowd of 500 or more people....hey, most of 'um can't get in front of their classroom to do an oral report without getting nervous!
Let's also see if that person can memorize 20-25 cheers a week without flaw...as we learn more and more as each season progresses.
On top of all of that, we are ambassadors to our schools, and respresent our schools in everyway. That includes charity and social work, fundraising and community activities.
IF YOU CAN HANDLE ALL OF THAT, AND KEEP YOUR GRADE POINT AVERAGE ABOVE A 2.5, THEN YES....I HAVE TO SAY THAT YOU ARE NOT ONLY AN ATHLETE BUT AN ASSET TO YOUR SCHOOL AND YOUR COMMUNITY!
'NUF SAID!

In an actual sport, teams are competing against one another. Cheerleading is sport when it is done competitively. Standing on the sidelines and yelling out stuff you are forced to remember isnt a sport.

If competing it can be considered a sport since:
1. They have to work out (run, lift weights, etc..)
2. Practice, practice, and practice.
3. A competition against others.
Since it fills all three things...its the same as any other sport like baseball or football.
However if it is nothing but standing on the sidelines and cheering on another sport...then it really isn't a sport.

Yes, its definitely a sport, you have to work hard! I remember when I wanted to be a cheerleader for a while in middle school and I talked to one of my friends who's a cheerleader, you have to learn dance routines, be strong and thin, practice allot, its a combination of gymnastics and dance. Anyone who says cheer-leading isn't a sport has never done it and should learn more about the sport before they open their mouth.

I lost a bet to the cheerleaders at my school about this. I said cheerleading isn't a sport and girls cant beat guys in sports. The bet was if I lost to a cheerleader in basketball they get to make me cheer any way they want, and they say "any way they want" means they can have me wear a cheer uniform to school and cheer at a pep rally.

I consider them athletic but that doesn't mean it is a sport. I guess if you did competitive cheerleading it is a sport. Although I'm not a big fan of that, but hey I guess it would make it a sport.

In definitely is! I'm an All-Star cheerleader who competes all around the nation. I'd like to see some people stunt and tumble like we do

i think so its not always easy to remember all the moves and routines and you have to be athletic to perform the moves. as far as being a very physical sport i dont think so but it still is a sport
