I'm tired of seeing "Wat" instead of "what" or "wich" instead of "which!" Is it that hard, really? We as a society are getting dumber and dumber.

Hmm..didn't know "wich" or "wat" was slang. Slang to me is like the word "chillen," when spelt and used a certain way it means you're laid back or just hanging out, not actually chilly. That's a slang term. I think I agree with the person that said it's just a way people are communicating online, mainly 14 year olds, but agree more with the lazy notion.

I agree, you can't depend on spellcheck, you should already know how to spell and know how to type. Chances are, if I really need a question answered I won't be going with the answerer who can't even spell the simplest words, so there's no need to speed type so yours is the first answer I see. And yes, I could use some help with my grammar, never said I was perfect, but at least people can read the words I'm typing and to me that is a lot less annoying. I work at a newspaper, I have to edit my own work at times, as well and see others edit, I have a lot to learn no doubt, but I don't sound like an idiot on here so I can live with that.

Know what "Java" you're right, this is a website, smart gal you are! And guess what? It's a forum where people can share and discuss important or trivial things. If you don't like it, don't answer and move on. From what it seems you tend to answer questions with a rather large chip on your shoulder. My suggestion? You should ask, "Why am I so bitter?"

Oh, and you mispelled a rather easy curse word thus proving my point.

A lot of people do that, but some misspell until all meaning is gone. I don't know how it's possible to misspell practically every word and it's easy to check your spelling here.

I personally do not need it as I have always been an excellent speller. But the issue is that most today do not care, and see nothing wrong sociologically with using wrong spellings - they think it's cute.

But in my world, unless I knew that someone had a real issue with not being able to learn how to spell (like a genius friend of mine with several patents but just absolutely no ability to spell -spells words differently each time, etc.) I will not view a "scoff-law" speller in the same light as a truly good speller or at least someone who is trying his/her best. I know it may sound like discrimination, but if I had to choose between someone who was just an awful speller but tried their best, and someone who could be good but thumbs his nose against spelling conventions, I am going to hire the former. In any business I would engage in I must have someone who WANTS to spell correctly.

But as a practical matter, here on Yahoo! if your answer is brief spell check works. But if you're a long-winded guy like me and you write a multiple-paragraph answer, it sometimes gets lost in a loop, never even starting to find any mistakes at all - I've actually been there 2 minutes waiting for it to look for my only possible mistaken spelling - like a weird word I haven't used in 20 years.

Not to pontificate, but this breakdown in spelling is parallel to the breakdown in manners and morals. Parents you need to get your act together!

P.S.: I have a sister who will not eat in a restaurant if the word tomato is spelled "tomatoe". So don't say it doesn't matter, because that restaurant just lost a sale to another with a properly proofread menu.

I don't use spellcheck because I have very decent spelling and I want to maintain my own proficiency and skill. Usually I read my text before posting and look for errors.

Too much reliance upon spellcheck can make you lazy. And, spellcheck isn't foolproof. It does make errors sometimes.

I completely agree. Is it stupidity? Laziness? Or maybe an unhealthy combination of the two. I'm ashamed of all of you poor typers. I wonder how you talk?
