Well, not all conferences share this theory, the big east only the top 12 make it, also the conference tournament is a way to allow for what you did in the regular season to really mean something. You prepare your teams to win but winning early is nothing compared to winning at the end and getting a chance to play for a national title. Some teams play hard and go through a seson relativly easy, meaning playing a weak non conference schedule and/or playing in weak conferences, the big 6 conferences should be obsolete because they recruit far more gifted players and get the top of the litter. By having conference tournaments where even the worst team still has a shot make for great competiton and spirit. If you really are the top team in the conference based on regular season play, then there is no excuse in my mind to loose in your conference tourney. If you do and you were the number one seed going in then you should be ridiculed, but hey this is march maddness and the name really means that in terms of college basketball.

Also a team that loses in the conference tournament can improve there chances of recieving an at large bid at the tournament with a Regular season conference championship on their resumee. Another reason is the seedings in the conference tournaments go by the regular season standings. Therefore the better you do in the regular season, the better chance you have winning the conference tournament and also better chances of getting an at large bid.

For the power conferences it means assurance of an at-large bid, better seeding in the NCAA tournament, better seeding and possible bye in the conference tournament, and it's not like a regular season championship doesn't mean anything either. For the lesser conferences the conference tournament gives them a chance to show themselves on national TV for a day.

Seeding in the Conf Tourny and the NCAA Tourny. The Conference tourny basically gives the opportunity for a high NCAA seed to solidify its seed or for a team which has improved over the course of the season to get in. An example currently may be Purdue which is a bubble team and might not get in to the NCAA Tourny. If they win the big ten tourny or do well it might make them stand out over the other bubble teams.

Because you have to have a good season to get a high seed in your tournament and in big conferences such as ACC and Big East you have to have a good season so you can get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Plus, in the Big East only the top 12 teams get into the conference tournament so you have to have a good season to get a chance at an automatic bid.

Not true. Four teams did not make the Big East tournament. Four teams don't make the Northeast tournament. Two teams don't make the Atlantic 10 tournament- and I think a few other conferences don't invite every team.

Seeding for the tournament, at large bids. Not every team makes it to their conference tournament. Four teams miss out on the Big East tourny every year.

Its all about the dollars, and a little bit of old fashioned pride. Its like a mini NCAA tourney. For teams that don't win the NCAA, at least they may have walked away with some hardware.
