From the Operating system, find the document and right click on it. A menu will pop up. select the "Properties" option from this menu. It will have a bunch of stuff, including a couple of check boxes, one of which is Read Only. make sure the Read only check box is unchecked, then click OK.

Sometimes this happens when your trial for microsoft office has expired. If not go to the file and right click it select properties and uncheck the readonly box.
Make sure that no one else has this document open on the network.
