Brute force attacks (dictionary of words and combinations) or some knowledge of the person generally work. You could also have a key logger that that intercepts the password in plain text. If you are trying to recover a system password that has been lost, some vendors apparently sell applications to assist in the cracking process but I haven't tried any to be able to give a reference. I'm sure you can find them by searching on "password recovery" in Google.

For Windows 2000 and XP there are programs you can buy that will by-pass the password and get you in when you start a computer. Wish I could think of the name for you, but we use it at work, when people Change passwods and can't remember what it is. As for cracking one by ramdom guessing???? Good LUCK!!!!! Look around the room for an easy answer, most use something there fimiliar with.

I searched eBay for used XP. None available, BUT, there were Linux programs to mimic an XP desktop and one very affordable program to unlock any copy of XP. I just checked, it's was yesterday, gone. Anyway, Linux XP mimic CD will access all the files. I'd troll on eBay looking for what you want.
