A Caesarean section, or C-section, is a form of childbirth in which a surgical cut is made through a mother's abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. In the past, it was usually performed when a vaginal delivery would lead to medical complications.

An incision is made in the abdomen above the pubic bone. The cut is most often horizontal (a bikini-line incision, which heals less noticeably) but can be vertical. A second incision is made in the uterus.

The baby and placenta are delivered through the incisions. The uterine incision is stitched closed, and the external incision is stitched or stapled closed. The surgery takes about an hour.

After surgery, the mother continues to receive medication for pain and should avoid lifting anything heavier than the baby for several weeks. The scar may itch or feel numb and look red.
