A member of my family has done this. Anyone offer any advice. Does the water float in which case replacing the fluid in the reservoir might be ok or is it a complete drain and flush?
Comments/advise appreciated as nothing found on searches.

Actually just the opposite. oil will float on the water (oil spills)

You need to remove the return hose from the pump this is the one with a clamp on it.
Suck out all the fluid you can,
Buy 4 bottles of Power steering fluid and with the return hose off and into a bucket start the engine and drain the system. then continually add the 3 bottles until you get to the 4th. Shut off the engine replace the hose and fill the system. Try not to drain the pump completely. If you have not driven it far you should be OK as the pump is heavy duty and will take some abuse like water.....Good Luck it may whine for a while but it will stop as air in the sytem will do this.

If the engine has not run since the water was added then draining just the reservoir should be fine. You will have to drain the entire reservoir by disconnecting the hoses because oil floats.

If the engine has run then the pump will have disbursed the water throughout the system and you will need to drain the system as completely as possible. You might still have problems later if something inside the steering rack started to rust or if some oily slime formed.

After you change the power steering fluid, drive the vehicle a lot so the steering system heats up. Maybe any remaining water will evaporate before causing problems.

If it was started or driven, the oil must be flushed out and replaced or the pump will be ruined. It has to be done anyway to get the water out.
I fixed a car whose owner filled his brake master cylinder with steering fluid. The rubber seal in the lid warped way out of shape and the whole brake system, master cylinder, wheel cylinders and disc brake calipers had to be replaced or have new seals installed. If you are not sure about something like that, ask a mechanic. Most will be glad to help you out. Nothing worse than trying to fix someones screw-up.

drain and flush it quickly. Because its a power steering pump, it will cycle the fluid in the res. This will mix water with specially designed fluid for that pump, and could quickly damage the pump mechanism.

Don't ask me how to drain and flush it though.... Never had to do it before! :-D

if the car has not been started since adding water drain pump completely. pour a little more new fluid into pump and drain again.
if it has been started drain and flush the complete system.
water will damage system!

If you haven't started the vehicle you can probably suck the water out. If the water is mixed with the fluid you'll have to flush the system.
