Instead of getting her a gift why don't you do a 'girls day out' with her. The two of you could go to lunch together, do some window shopping, get a manicure/pedicure, whatever you both like to do.

Make her a nice lunch, or put together a photo album of your life together - something that you have made yourself always means more than the most expensive gift. My mum still uses a homemade bookmark (made from a tissue box) that I gave her 15 years ago.

We gave my mom mud last year and she really liked it.
Yup, about 15 yards of top-soil spread and tilled into her garden.
I'm thinking about getting a family picture done for her.

If you have any siblings, a ring with the birthsones of her children is a nice gift. If you're an only child, yours and hers.

How old is your mum ? Maybe a crystal heart shaped pendant with a silver necklace.

Make a donation in her name to fight world poverty or global warming or some other good cause that your mother cares about.
Two suggestions:
http://www.heifer.org/ (donate livestock to a needy family)
http://www.nativeenergy.com/ (buy a share of a windfarm)
Good luck!
