I live in an apartment with a nice outside space, but its not permanent. I'll probably move within 1-2 years. So I'd like to be able to take my tree with me. If I put a lemon tree sapling in a pot, would it last? How long before it would bear fruit? What's the best time of year to buy a lemon tree? I live in San Francisco.

I've had great luck growing dwarf citrus trees in pots. I would pass on three hints for success. First, and most important---make sure you have a BIG pot. I started with smaller pots, but switched to the large foam pots as the trees got bigger. You need to check at least once a year to make sure that the plants are not root bound. Second, your tree will need lots of sun and heat---but it will need one more key ingredient---bees! The bees need to pollinate the blooms in order for the fruit to set. Make sure the trees are near other plants that will attract bees, and then they will find your citrus blooms with no trouble. Third, if you successfully execute on points one and two---then you'll be rewarded with lots of blooms and lots of new fruit However I would recommend you thin the fruit. For small young trees---less than 5 years old---it will be painful, but remove all the fruit. Then as the tree grows and gets older and stronger start out by leaving 5-6 small fruits then more and more as your plant grows. Then sit back with a gin and tonic and enjoy la dolce vita.

You could pretty much plant anything inside a pot. Just make sure to take the steps in learning how to maintain a keep up a tree in a pot. Going to your local garden store would help.

Best time of year, don't know for your area. We have a lemon tree in a pot now. It's 15 years old. It's about 6 ft. tall now. Last year was the first year it's ever put out fruit. So, you'll have a while before it starts to reproduce.

I would defiantly keep it outside with lots of light.

i bought one at homedepot that was potted and supposed to grow inside. But i am a terrible mother to plants and it died. I think if it has enough light that it will be okay. Maybe ask your local home depot for advise since they sell them.
