With your listed uses in mind, any laptop will do you more than fine.
Have a look at them in action, consider the quality of the image on screen, the brightness of the screen, and have a go on the keyboard to see how it feels to you. Also consider the tracking pad, as you'll be using this a lot when browsing the web (although I personally use a mouse with my laptop).
Above all don't buy a laptop for its brand, as you will always fall short there.
EDIT - contrary to popular belief, computers do not go out of date straight away, or after a year. A standard computer you buy today will still be doing all the things that it needs to do, and play all the latest games, in 3 or 4 years, maybe more. Of course this doesn't count if you buy the cheapest, lowest spec machine, but as a rule its nonsense. Just cos something better comes out, doesn't make something obsolete.

My first laptop was a fantastic Sony Vaio. Since then I have bought Dells in both the US and the UK. I store lots of music and photos, as well as music editing and the internet.
Sony's support really sucked, they wouldn't let me buy a replacement Windows OEM version, even though I was the registered purchaser! I even called on Christmas eve, hoping that someone may have had more sympathy, but there was a brick wall. So I now don't buy any type of Sony product, computer or otherwise.
On the other hand, Dell support has been generally good and reliability has been better than Sony's. By all means compare features but there is more to the 'product' than that, service is also highly important.
Good luck! Rob

There is a better choice. I too wanted a laptop for photos and internet and gaming and I wanted this
* Vista
* Wide screen
* Very fast
* Low price
* Great gaurantee
I looked at Dell, Sony, Compaq, gate way but then I found hp at hpshopping.com and couldn't believe how much more you get for the money.
I have, get this, not a 15 inch screen or 16 but 17 inch! I have had it for sometime now and I love it.
What is good about hp is you get a full size keyboard and they have 4 usb ports so you can run a lot of things. For music you'd be in heaven as I heard the sony and dells speakers and they sound ok but kinda tinny like an aluminum can kinda.
The hp sounds more stereo'ish
You will be very pleased with the prices

I have read here at Yahoo Answers that someone took a dell computer apart to install something and found to there horror that there was a key-logging component already inside there computer so I would if I were you buy the Sony Vaio,
after all who in there right mind would want a spy-ware key-logger in there new PC,
OK so the Sony Vaio might cost a few pounds more but then its best to be safe then sorry. good luck and safe computing.

If you want a cheap, reliable laptop then choose a Dell simply because they are easy to use and at a much more affordable price. Dells may not be as good looking as a Sony Vaio lives up to but you get more for you money with a Dell and if parts are broken, Dell are very helpfull and give you a two year quarantee on any laptop purchased. I'm using their INSPIRON 6400 and my sister has the INSPIRON 640 M which would suit you as it is small in size and perfect for playing music and has loads of memory for all those piccys! They also come with built in wireless for your internet. If i were you i would look on Dells' website and look at all their offers

DELL!!!, Ive now had a dell for a while with no problems, I did have a sony viao but encountered many problems and found that a lot of additional hardware will not work with the sony, i think its a ploy to make you buy only sony extras.... HP is also a good reliable make of laptops

I've had my Sony Vaio since June 2004 - yes, I know it's almost an antique! - but I'm still extremely happy with it. It still does everything I need - and I use it for work as well as personal. I originally bought it for convenience when travelling, but find that I now use it in preference to my desktop computer at home. I use it for everything from documents to photos, music and the internet. Didn't really like laptops before I bought this - but I'm a total convert now.

Have used HP Dell and Sony , sony is a classy product - and others are good work horses - I would go for dell now as all are defunct within months and are getting changed as frequently as mobiles - There's very little point in getting a flash brand as will be dogmeat by this time next year - Have a look at the "panasonic tough books" if you want the last word in functional and funky (laptops that allow you to spill coffee over THEN RECOMMEND you rinse them with water - now that is usefully cool! )
Enjoy.
