While you don't want to buy for one season, then another, it make sense to buy for both when you shop. So you don't have to run to the store each time the temperature fluctuates.
A newborn should wear loose easy to open clothing. Little tee shirts that open from the front, with snaps or ties. Gowns, pajamas. You can get colors and patterns that you like.
I live in an area that has weather like yours. You never know what you are going to get. You want to dress the baby comfortably, and dress them for the temperature.
For warm or hot weather, a tee or a 1 or 2 piece top & bottom set with short sleeves or no sleeves. The length of the pants is optional, but the baby will be more comfortable if his or her legs are uncovered.
No blanket is necessary, unless a cool or strong wind is blowing; or if inside, the air conditioner is on. Then the baby will be okay lightly covered with a receiving blanket .
For very cool or cold weather, pajamas or a 1 or 2 piece top and bottom set with long sleeves and long legs is better. You can wrap your baby in a heavy blanket or two, or you can get the baby a 1 piece snowsuit without legs. Make sure you cover the baby's face with a receiving blanket when you go outside.
There are little seaters available as well, if the top has short sleeves. Some come with hats or caps, and some zip up the back, which are much, much easier to work with.
For hot and cold weather hats and caps are optional. But they are cute. Remember, heavy knit items are for winter, just like they are for you. Lightweight fabrics are for warm and hot weather.
Remember to get multiples of the gowns and pajamas because babies spit up, and diapers may leak.
Make sure you resist the temptation to overdress your baby. He or she will feel and sleep better if they are comfortable.
Your baby doesn't need shoes, but they are too too cute; but he or she will need sock and/or booties.
Don't for get to buy a supremely adorable, outfit for first professional photos. You can also put the baby in this the first time you take him or her out to meet people.
You may want to visit a few large stores and boutiques to get an idea of what is available. You can also request catalogs and sit at home while you make your decisons and shop.
Have fun, and I hope you find everything you need and want.
Congratulations on the baby!
P.S. Because you are in Canada some of the names I used may be unfamiliar to you, because you may call them something different. I hope you know someone who can help you figure them out.
Everyone else gave great advice too!
And I hope this helped!

go garage saleing in your community that is the cheapest more effective way to buy clothes, some of the clothes aren't even worn. I'd suggest you to have this:
7 - 8 onesies
3 -4 pairs of pants (just to go with the onesies for short trips)
3 - 4 shirts (you can buy these at walmart in the pack)
2 - 3 take out outfits (to show your child off in)
2 or 3 hats
2 or 3 coats (for those cold nights you take them for a walk in)
your choice on how many gloves and booties to have, some just like a pair or 2 some like lots, it depends on your style.
you might want to get that list in both 0-3 mnths and 3-6 months. Make sure you look at the weight sizes though when you buy some of them are marked as newborn(or0-3 months) and they only have the size up to 8 lbs. That would be a good take home outfit. Have you ever thought about a baby sling, there good to have when you grocery shop and take small walks.

If the weather is so variable, you have to be prepared for all temps. For hot weather, onsies are great for day and night. They have really cute ones that look like real clothes, not just undershirts. For cold weather, I would use heavy weight union suits with matching socks. I hate feety sleepers as the baby can pull his legs up and then his feet come out of the foot holes. Again, onsies under clothes keep his back covered. Do not buy ahead in sizes as your baby may grow faster or slower and then the sizes may not correspond with the correct season. Hope this helps.

first of all, make sure what you buy is 100% cotton or all natural materials- babies can have a sensitivity to polyester and other synthetic materials.
Next get clothes that are good for layering, onesies, gowns, jackets and button down sweaters- you want each layer to be light. If it is really cold, dress baby in several layers and if you are out and it warms up you can take layers off. Dress baby just like you would dress yourself according to the weather. If it is really frigid, use blankets. It is easier to dress with layers adding and taking off clothes than bringing three different outfits and changing three times a day. It is fairly easy to get layering type clothing for babies- get a little knit hat for very cold days, hats are one of the best things anyone can wear to keep warm on cold windy days.
You can get little coordinated outfits that are light knit short sleeved or sleeveless onesie (all in one) jumper type outfits, they often come with a hat, a shirt to go underneath, and or a long sleeved jacket to go over it, then oyu can get a sweater and some booties and socks- if it is cold wear all of the above, when it warms up take of the sweater, warmer, take off the jacket, warmer wear the jumper without the undershirt- cold wear socks and booties, warmer wear only sock or booties, hot- let baby have happy happy bare feet! You can get several mix and match pieces and it will keep your budget low, your diaper bag light and baby happy and comfortable. Always bring a nice blanket so no matter what baby is wearing, if it is really cold and windy wrap him or her up cuddly and baby will be toasty warm
Congratulations on your new little blessing!!!!

I had this same question when I was pregnant and due in September last year! I just bought things with layers, like sets that come with sweaters (I have a girl) or things that I could put a long sleeve onsie underneath. I'm really glad I did because I wasn't due until September 2nd but had her August 24th and it was still pretty steamy for a few more weeks. I would just try to get a little bit of both, and keep in mind that you can always add more layers but you can't take them away if you only buy summer stuff. Congratulations and cross your fingers for a cool summer!

I would suggest buying onsies and the little sleeper night gowns that are long. You can't ever buy too many socks either. That way if it is warmer, you could put on the onsie and if it happened to cool off, then throw on the sleeper. The sleeper is long enough to cover the legs and most of the time they have the little fold down sleeves that make into little mittens...good for cold hands or to keep the baby from scratching their face. Aaawww...that was one of my favorite things about having a little one...picking out the clothes. Congratulations and Good Luck!

Honestly, I would invest in 6 each of short sleeved and long sleeved onsies, and long pants. September is an iffy time with the weather. A baby can't hold it's temperature as well as an adult and does need to be warmer than you like it. Extra blankets at that age are a great way to compensate if you don't have warm enough clothes.
Congrats on your new little one!

For the first month or so they practically live in onsies get some long and some short sleeved. Also a couple pairs of pants. Remember if you are comfortable in shorts and a tee shirt so will your baby. Plus if they seem a little cold there is always plenty of blankets laying around.

I spent money on cute little newborn pants and shirts type outfits and he only wore them once each. The shirts always creep up and they just don't look that comfortable. So, I'd suggest getting 2 packs of Gerber Sleep-N-Plays. They're those footed pajama type things. They're light and cotton so you can wrap the baby in a blanket if it's cold or unrap them if it's hot. I use them everyday. I put him in a onesie and socks and then the sleep-n-play. They're great. Congratulations!

buy a small amount of warm clothes and some cool clothes if your worried about cost, second hand is okay, just wash the clothing first before using. You can usually get an outfit second hand for 5 dollars or less.
