If you are staying on the East Side in Manhattan, you can take the 4 train to Fordham Road, a very fast and convenient way to get there. If you are on the West Side, you can take the D train which also stops on Fordham Road. The subway is a much cheaper and also much faster way to get there because traffic in New York can get pretty bad. The subway fare is $2 dollars each way and the taxi fare would be $30+ depending on what part of Manhattan you're talking about. Manhattan is very narrow but long so if you're in Lower Manhattan, it may cost a lot more. Have fun in New York!
P.S. Fordham is one of the best places to shop! You should always try to bargain there and its likely you'll get "discounts"....

First check to see if there is a subway station near where you want to go. If so, it will only cost you $2 for the train ride. Otherwise it will depend on traffic, but it should be about $25-$35, plus tolls.
