Why do people reply with;

Is it ? Really ? Did you ? So it's not there then ? So you haven't got it then ?

It's so IRRITATING, just stop it!

Anyone else agree ?

its pure laziness.

notice how useless presenters of tv chat programmes will just repeat the last word the person theyre interviewing has just said, but turn it lazily into a question-its pure padding

It's like they don't want to give you an answer until they have a better idea what your own take on the subject is, either because 1. They don't want to disappoint you with their answer.
2. In case they "arm" you with information that may make them vulnerable / open to criticism.
3. They haven't had time to analyze the question, and form an opinion.
4. They are not interested in the subject matter and by passing it back to you, means they don't have to deal with it.
5. They don't have an answer, and don't want too look ignorant /unknowledgeable.
6. They think it's none of your business.

Because people have to fill every silence with noise. They can't bear to just have peace and quiet and must therefore fight the lack of noise in any way possible.

Yes it is irritating.

Because sometimes a question is more telling than an answer.

It's just a style, don't let it bug you so much.
