One day (perhaps after an update), my battery changed from lasting 2.5 hrs to 30 minutes. The second I unplug the stupid thing it drops to 80%. It could either be the battery or some bad update. Any advice?

A new battery likely ins't a bad idea, but does anyone think it has to do with a faulty guage or switch? Maybe perhaps firmware? I don't know, just seemed to happen quickly.

The best way to make your battery last longer is to let it run down down completely before recharging. Batteries have memories and when you charge it before it is run down then it will re-run down to that point.
Also do not leave the battery charging in your laptop past the point it is recharged. When it is recharged take the battery out and put it back in when you are not plugged into electricity.
This goes for cell phones also.

If the battery is over a year old it is probably just going dead. You may have a bad cell. At this point there probably isn't anything you can do. If you think it is due to an update, do a system restore to that date and see if it solves your problem, but I think you will find that you just need a new battery.

Batteries go bad over time and you have to get a new one but you can find batteries cheap for your system. Lets say you have dell just for example. Go to google.com and type in

buy dell laptop battery

All kinds of sites will pop up where you can buy batteries for your computer and there are even companies besides your manufacturer that have generic batteries that are just as good and cheaper.

Sounds like you have a bad battery, try replacing it and see if that helps you.
