Yes the ps3 does play ps2 and ps1 games and even allows games saves to harddrive and allows you to move existing save s from the ps1 and ps2 memory cards to the harddrive. $14 adaptor required for existing card transfer.

The European system willbe able to play ps1 and ps2 games once the owner of the ps3 gets the update allowing it. Sony came up with a emulator which allows the european systems to play ps1 and ps2 games.

Hope this helps.

Becca is incorrect. Sony has a list of the games that are compatable on the PS3. They even released a statement back in November when it came out that not all PS1 and 2 games will play on the new console. I would love a PS3 though... Only reason why I haven't gotten one is simply because there has not been a game released yet that would make me want to go get it.

U cnt use a ps3 unless u have an hd ready tv and another thing is ps1 games will work but most ps2 wont due to according to the news sony put inferior chips to european version so the issue of backward compatibility with ps2 games have problems.

PS3 is the best gaming console/dvd/PC replacement. And although it's not necessary to have an expensive television, once you've seen a PS3 hooked up to a Bravia you won't want to go back. Nothing matches the combination. And the 3 is backward compatible, for anyone to say otherwise is just ignorance of the facts. My only complaint is that Forsa isn't a PS game. Blueray is oh so fine. It's like you can crawl right into the screen and live virtually.

look everyone... here's the point: PS3 will play MOST ps2 and ps1 titles. NOT all. you DO NOT need an HD TV to use, but its looks better. bottom line, ps3 is great system, 80% people who bought love it and you probably will too. either way, you can probably use your ps2 and ps1 titles, so you wont HAVE to buy new games, but the new games are better. also, make sure that you dont believe ANYONE who ps3 is terrible. it ISNT doing well, but it will. please wait a while if you're scared of what the first answerer replied. she isnt right. (Drick is right!!!) but if you're scared of what she said wait a while, it will get more popular as time goes by just wait and see.

dont even consider what the first girl said.

She's wrong.

I own one and it works with all my ps2 and ps1 games. The $599 comes with the ability to upload ps1 and ps2 saves onto the system. You don't need an HDTV because I play on a $99 20" tv in my basement and it works great. It always works and will keep on working. Never experienced an error. So I don't know what she was talking about.

To answer your question, the PS3 plays 98% of all PS2 and PS1 games. In the last update it fixed the bad picture of BC and now it has been release it shall up-scale of PS2 and PS1 games to 720p and 1080i/p (HD)
So there you go and good luck :)

They should work on the PS3. In the UK that new final fantasy game came out so you should be able play that on the PS3. One thing that i'm confused about is would the PS1s & 2s games be able to save on the PS3.

true answer-the japanese and american ps3 can play all ps2 titles....but this function has been removed from the european version...
explanation-the jap/usa consoles contain a chip that allows ps2 games to work just by slipping the disc in as normal...however, the europian version will only allow access to just over 1,000 ps2 games-why?to cut costs, despite the europian market being roughly the same size as the native japanese one.
as for ps1 games, all i know for sure is that somehow they, via the ps3, can be downloaded to a psp.

from what i've heard the ps3 will NOT be backwards compatible, Sony will be focusing on development of ps3 titles only, thats why ASDA were flogging ps2 consoles for under 50 quid a couple of months ago

sorry!
