i may be 2 weeks pregnant, and I've been smoking cigarettes. Is this harmful to a zygote since it doesn't have lungs yet? Can this ruin the development? If so, how? And lots of smokers don't find out they are pregnant until 2 months later and they come out with healthy babies. When is a good time to quit?

Can't fix what's already done.

STOP NOW.

Better for you and much better for your child.

There's no such thing as 2 weeks pregnant. You must have been 3-4 weeks when you were smoking it. I'm sure the poor baby will be fine, but yeah quit. Obviously you don't want to be the stoner mom. Plus smoking weed is something teenagers do. It's not a good look for a mom.

Now is the perfect time to quit. The sooner the better. I was a smoker. A few days before I took a test with my first child I was smoking and drinking alot. I kind of freaked after I found out but my doctor says since it was so early in the pregnancy everything would be fine. Smoking is a hard habit to quit but it's the best thing for both you and your baby Good Luck.

Wow, people gave you very judgmental answers. Yes, ideally you should quit now, but that is easier said than done. Going cold turkey is difficult, and recent studies have shown that tapering off the cigarette gradually is much better. Since you are now motivated to stop it should be easier, but there are things that can also help you especially in the beginning. Try nicotine patch, it can help you through the nicotine addiction. Gradually decrease the nicotine content. Do not smoke though when you are using it. Nicotine chewing gums are good options too. Your doctor can also help you by prescribing antidepressants shown to help quitting, but in pregnancy it is better to avoid any unnecessary medications. So reserve it to the event if you can't beat smoking otherwise.
Smoking is not good for the developing embryo, or the newborn baby for that matter, yet before we all learned about how bad smoking is many women smoked throughout their pregnancies and delivered perfectly healthy babies.
So, if you can do it quit, so you and your family can have a much longer and healthier life together.

If you think you are pregnant or trying to conceive you should of stopped smoking already, yes it can harm your fetus. As far as the age of the fetus I'm not sure but I do know that it takes a while for the nicotine to fully leave your system so stop now and that way if you are little damage will have been done. Yes some people smoke their entire pregnancy and nothing is wrong, but many more who do that either miscarry or have birth abnormalities such as premature labor, undeveloped lungs and low birth weight, all of which can affect the child for their entire life. Good Luck and God Bless.

Stop now! Smoking doesn't just affect YOUR lungs, so why would you think it would only affect your baby's lungs?? Smoking is a stimulant, which will affect how your baby's body's cells multiply. It slows the growth rate and can cause birth defects along the way. If you don't stop asap, it will make your baby's heart race, and cause the baby to be addicted to nicotine, and go through withdrawls, either while still in you or after it's born. Some people who smoked the first month or two while pregnant are lucky and their babies don't have defects- not all are so lucky!

Just stop smoking now. I was 3-4 weeks pregnant when I found out and had no idea I was pregnant. Went to Florida for my birthday and drank everyday for 4 days, I was a smoker when I drank so I had a few that week, and I got a tattoo. These are all aweful things when pregnant and all my ultrasounds say my baby is fine and healthy. good luck I am sure you will be fine

Its always a good time to quit, pregnancy being the best reason. Some Doctors depending on how much you smoke may recommend you cut right down, as it can be stressfull to quit at the best of times, Personally I quit the minute my test went positive, just like that.
Development wise, it is reported that the birth weight of babies to mothers who smoke is often lower than average.

Good Luck with what ever choice you make.

Quit as soon as possible. Just because the baby doesn't have lungs doesn't mean it can't damage it. The toxins in your cigarettes are what damage the baby. Yes, some smokers have healthy babies, but ya know what? Some don't. Best of luck to you with the quitting and the pregnancy!

A good time to quit is before you get pregnant. That way you aren't dealing with the stress of quitting and the stress of being pregnant. However, I am not sure if you are trying to get pregnant or not, so now would be a good time to quit. Smoking can decrease a baby's birth weight, cause a premature birth, increase chance of SIDs, increase chance of learning disabilities, and increase chance of a miscarriage. If you think you may be pregnant, go to your doctor and find out for sure!

You shouldn't be smoking during any point of your pregnancy. The first few weeks of pregnancy is a very critical period of development where the baby's vital organs start forming. Although some people seem have given birth to healthy babies while smoking, it is a very risky thing to do. The baby still has a higher chance of being born with a defect to its vital organs or it may have learning or physical disabilities as it grows older.
