Bob's Steak and Chophouse in the Omni Hotel for a true gourmet steakburger. One of those beasts feeds me for about two days!

Or for something more casual, don't forget about the Original Joe's hamburger sandwich on fresh sourdough bread with steak fries. If you don't mind fighting the tourists, it's about as San Francisco as a hamburger can get.

I'd have to agree with the person who said Bill's, because I used to live at 27th and Clement and definitely went there a few times. Here are some other possibilities (but, *gasp*, no Bill's on this list).

I agree with Big Turbo about Chow. And there's another branch of it with the same menu. It's called Park Chow, and it's on 9th Ave. in the block just south of Golden Gate Park, on the east side of the street.

Bills on Clement at 25th, the best burgers in the city. Lots of creative toppings, great malts and good fries.

when I visited there , I ate at the fisherman's wharf. they don't just have fish. they had some really great big juicey mouth watering ham/cheeseburgers. , I loved the view there too. they had the old prison house they called the rock. and many people on the streets playing a cheerful game of chess/ checkers. this truely was my spot for a good burger, it felt like home.

If you ever find yourself a little north of SF in Napa Valley, either Big D, or Taylor's Refresher. Both of them have absolutely stellar burgers.
