I love music by Diana Ross, the Supremes, and Billie Holiday. My husband thinks I'm weird to like that type of music seeing as how I'm only 21. So, am I alone here?

Um, yeah. Most music today totally sucks. Why would I listen to Fall Out Boy or some other no-substance crap when there is Zeppelin?

When you compare some of the populat bands out today to bands from the past, they don't even begin to compete. There are some good bands around, but they aren't that popular. Shows like American Idol push the idea that image and ability to perform are much more important then songs that are good. So I would say you are weird if you don't like songs from before your time.

Oh, definitely not! For me, Jazz is where it's at. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis... love it all.

As far as other genres, I'd definitely have to say that bands like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Hollies, etc. are in my top favorites. And I'm only 16.

I think part of it is all in how you're raised. When I was a kid, my mom pretty much had me trained to recognize Beatles songs from the first five notes. The first song I remember knowing ALL the words to was 'Brown Sugar' by Rolling Stones. I pity the kids who didn't grow up with that kind of diverse background.

No. God no!!

Half my music is before I was born. I listen to a blues show on Saturday nights and hear amazing stuff from artist I never even heard of. I'd rather listen to Robert Johnson or the Beatles or Elton John. Listen to Janis Joplin and you'll wonder how Gwen Stefani was ever allowed near a microphone! Listen to Etta James sing "At Last" and you'll laugh the next time some American Idol wannbe sings it.

I had a friend who only listened to music if it was in the top 40 RIGHT NOW! He'd buy CDs and in two weeks he wouldn't play them. Why?

Absolutely! As a child I learned the songs of Sophie Tucker. Your husband is missing out on some great music.
I was 15 when the Beatles conquered the world. ( I went to their first American concert, in Wash.,D.C.! 4th row,$4.) The music of the fifties and 60's is what I truely love and all that came before that time. The stuff they call music today is only noise.

i grew up as a little kid in the late 80's listening to motown and classic r&b, then as i got a little older and the testosterone kicked in i really got into led zeppelin and Kiss and Sabbath and stuff.

i'd say that about 95% of the stuff i listen to is from at least 30 years ago.

but i think thats a good thing, because in general, young people today dont bother looking at anything that came before them UNLESS they see it in a movie or on tv. i'm a guitar teacher, and theres a lot of kids that come in to take lessons and they think that AC-DC and guns and roses are new or something. lol.

its funny, they have it really easy to find out about all the bands from the past, but they only pay attn to whats spoonfed to them by mtv or fm radio. when i was a kid i used to spend HOURS of time going through my aunts and uncles record collections. i didnt care about the music that was popular when i became teen, i had already found all this music that was way better than that, and being as i played guitar, i understood the difference between players who could actually play or not.

dont get me wrong, some new music is ok, but when i was really getting into it, Nirvana had just made it big, and that guy just couldnt play guitar. great songwriter, had a lot of stuff to say, great lyrics, but instrumentally...... not a lot going on. i was immersed in the greats by then, so new stuff couldnt hold a candle.

Absolutely not. Most of the music that my friends and I listen to is before our time (I.E. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Band, etc.) Music today is just not as satisfying besides a few exceptions. I believe a lot of people listen to music before their time. You need to know the past before you can appreciate the present.

You are definately not alone...I love old music because there is a message, and it's not all about killing someone, or drugs or something like that. You always feel the artist's pain and joy and whatever they were feeling. You can always find a older song to uplift you when you are down. One of my favs is "Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly and Maze...that's what I clean up to on Saturday mornings.

I'm only 32 but I love doo-wop music and actually watch the PBS specials with the live performances of the old groups. You're not alone - let's get on the born after our time bandwagon!

Not at all! I'm only 22 and I just adore the music back before I existed due to the huge influence of my siblings whom are around their early to late 30s. That's probably why I listen to old music - I grew up with it!
