Listening too loud for too long is very bad for your hearing. You could end up with tinitus - a constant, low-level ringing in your ears. I've listened to loud music for decades, and yep - my ears are constantly ringing. The loud sounds eventually break the little hairs in your ear that pick up sound, that causes the ringing. It's not a killer, but I'd rather they not ring. So, take it from me - try to keep the volume down.
BTW - in Europe, by law iPods and other music players can't go above 150 decibels (I think), to avoid damaging users' ears.

I damaged my hearing listening to my iPod really loud, and I'm only 13. Normally I'd be able to hear to 17000 hertz but now I can only hear about 10000. There's one thing you can do to allow your volume to be higher but not neccesarily all the way up.

If you go into iTunes and right click on any song, then click options and changed the volume adjustment to 100% it will make it really loud only half way up so it's easier to keep track off on how bad it is to your ears.

To give you an estimate the loudest and iPod can be is 150db or an equivalent to a jet engine taking off. Only 10 seconds of it will damage your hearing. 90db will damage hearing after 30 minutes.

Of course it will, it might cause tinnitus or long tern hearing problem (ringing will stay forever). I suggest if you're home, use speakers instead. iPod is for commuting or gym purposes, also you should not turn the volume too high, that why the new iPods have volume control.

It was once French government did not allow iPod being imported to their country because of the volume issue.

yes it can damage your ears extremely, the tiny ear phones that come with ipods are really really bad for your hearing, you think the music is lower than it is because you can hear other sounds around you that disturb your music but truthfully the music is twice as loud as youthink and the vibrations slowly distroy your hearing. not to mention the headphones harbor bacteria that can cause infection. dont turn it up so loud or get ear phones that cover the ears completely
