It's a personality test, used to point to people's preferred ways of dealing with the world.
Here's a link, with a powerpoint presentation included that might help:

I have my doubts about it's validity as a "true" assessment because your results change from time to time and in different situations.

However, I will tell you about a very good experience I had with it. Years ago I took a week-long leadership training seminar. The first night we were given the M-B test. We were told it didn't matter if we believed in it, just to be as truthful as possible.

The next morning we were instructed to write our letters on our name tags so they were visible to everyone else. We wore these all week.

We broke into many different groups throughout the week and worked with different people. We always had a coach in the group that was experienced with the leadership experience. There were always a few people that tended to be "Just Do It" types (like me- I was an ENFP). And there were always some who were "Think it through thoroughly before speaking" types.

This was a great learning experience for me. At the beginning of the week I just plunged in. I learned through the week that just because the ISTJ (or whatever) people were quiet didn't mean they didn't have an opinion. I learned a lot about waiting for responses, about giving everyone a chance to speak, and so forth. It was a very good experience.

That said, I still don't know that it's a definite personality indicator, but I did see that it could be a useful learning tool.

The purpose of the Myers-Briggs test is to assess people's personalities. Once the results are known, they are used to group certain people together in order to achieve workable team dynamics. In other words, every person on a team can have completely different personalities so that everyone will have something different to bring to the table.

The Meyers-Briggs is an inventory of a person's personality. I think there are 16 types of personality the Meyers-Briggs reveals. It is used to assign room mates in colleges, and, sometimes, who should work with who. The theory is, that those who share personality types are more likely to get along with one another. And that sounds reasonable to me. I don't remember what my profile is, but the test is probably online somewhere. It's very simple - which is good.

It's about personality types, I'm an ISTJ. As an example the first letter is either an I (introvert) or an E (extrovert), I'm an I just to the left of centre, so in certain situations I can be an E.

Can't really be more helpful, it's a vast subject and quite detailed, there must be loads of information on the web.
