Quite often I have to read memos, papers, informational literature, etc. Even when it is somewhat interesting, I find it very difficult not to fall asleep and/or become distracted.

Read out loud, walk while you read, music helps unless you get distracted by it or if you listen to a lullaby! Try to imagine you are teaching somebody all the stuff that you are reading. Switch on the TV but keep the volume a bit low....

Depending on how many people are around you, try reading out loud. Also, try removing yourself from your normal reading environment and taking breaks in between reading. Plus, sometimes having music in the background helps. It sounds like you just need something to break the monotony.

Falling asleep is natural when reading, b/c your body and mind are more relaxed. Take breaks while reading. Try reading under a bright light.

Don't read for long stretches of time. Get up, take a ten minute break, even a walk and you will come back refreshed. Make sure the room is not overheated.

Get comfortable... not too comfortable... also have a drink near by... like a ice water to drink, when you feel your eye's too heavy... chew some gum while reading... you know... walk around while you read...

Then you should eat some dark chocolate. Preferably, one that has 70% or more cacao. That will definitely awaken your senses and keep you up; it's also healthy : )

Stand up while you're reading. Pacing is even better because you can burn calories while you're learning.
