How fast is your computer? If you don't have a video card that does hardware DVD decoding then your CPU is responsible for "unpacking" the data stored on the DVD. If your CPU is slow or busy running a lot of other programs then you can see choppy playback. Make sure the disc is clean, close down any other programs eating up power, and see if playback improves. If it does then we know the problem. If it doesn't then make sure your video card is still set to hardware mpeg 2 decoding, If nothing else works then you may just have a dying drive on your hands.

Most likely you do not have DMA enabled on the DVD drive. This used to be a common problem, but not anymore.
By default, newer operating systems enable this on optical drives. If you have an older operating system, it may not be enabled. The easiest way to do it would be to uninstall and reinstall powerDVD, it has a built in DMA detector that will ask you if you want to enable it.
If you have WindowsXP, it should already be enabled. If that is the case, you might want to try cleaning your dvd drive. Go to any electronics retailer and just buy your normal CD DVD drive cleaner. Should run you less than 10 bucks.

Hi. Make sure your GPU is adequate for the game. My old card had a hard time with HALO, choppy graphics etc., but the Radeon 9800 PRO plays it as smooth as silk. But F.E.A.R. is right on the edge.
