I believe in "telling it as you find it", so after fifteen years of working closely with many hundreds of Americans in other countries, followed by 6 months of living in Florida, my impression about the vast majority of Americans I have met is that they are deservedly proud of and caring about their country and their local community.
"If you just love those Yanks" is hardly a phrase I would use to describe myself, however, I can say that Americans have always given me, a Brit, their unreserved friendship and hospitality without hesitation and that I count many Americans among my very closest friends.
While living in Florida, I was frankly amazed at the overall tidiness of the town I lived in, enhanced particularly by the neat gardens and general cleanliness of the area I lived in. I quickly found out that the local residents really worked at and invested in keeping it that way. OK some hired people to do the work, but the point is, they took care to be sure their home looked good at all times. Living there, I really appreciated their kind of community care and concern for others.
Unfortunately, having returned to the UK and settled in the North in a region of comparative financial status, I am sorry to say that my local community and region pales in all areas of comparison.
Spoiled by American youths who have been brought-up to really care for their community, I feel most concern for the large numbers of British children who are growing-up with no pride in their community. In the past two years, I have witnessed too many cases of lack of respect for other people and their property in my region. I am also growing used to seeing people throwing their litter on the streets and have yet to see one other resident cleaning litter up, as I do around my house. If I go on to comment on the "binge drinking", foul-mouthed youths that gather in my town center most nights, well to summarise, it is very evident that as a nation we don't have many of the "old values" in the UK anymore. It would be interesting to hear what American's think about us Brits!
With due respect to the person who asked the question, the comments in the question concerning the American President are both disrespectfully and unworthy of publication - but that's only my opinion! Further, the answer which hurled back abuse at those Brits who elected Mr Blair also isn't a respectful reaction! I figure it is much better to consider US and British politics a totally disreputable area, unworthy of our mutual consideration and comments. Let us heed the words of a British politician who recently answered the question of how she came into politics by remarking, "By falling into bad company."

It's common knowledge in America that both elections were fixed and our simpleton president didn't actually get elected. He cheated and won twice. Next Americans are all messed up in the head because the country was founded on a democratic principle, so that the people could elect whoever they want. However it was set up to be a capitalist society, and the only people that have the power to change the state of things are the wealthy. So that being the case the rich people make all the rules in America. All the middle class and poor people in American have to just live their lives while the country goes to hell. There's nothing the common man can do, short of a revolution, to change this country. But everyone always wants to point the finger. The whole planet is full of humans and no person is perfect. We're not perfect, so stop spreading hate.

Well, as I haven't met every American I can't really say.
To speak of them as one person, would give the wrong impression.
I would say they have the same attributes, and failings of people in other countries.
Looking at things realistically, just because you don't like George Bush, doesn't mean you have to dislike Americans as a whole. That is a strange way of thinking.
This isn't a true answer to your question because I can't say what I like about them as a whole. Those I've met, have been generous, and speak well of our country, which is more than I can say, for quite a few people from the British Isles; when speaking about America.
Sweeping statement comes to mind...
I am from the UK.

I am AMerican. I voted for an Imbecile because the other candidate was a treasonous moron. I am listening to this conversation (such as it is) to get a perspective on how other countries view us. I really hope that you don't take the hollywood films and form your impression of all of us, America has a large population (about half of Europes total) so please understand that yes we do have imbeciles and fat people, we also have a large smart and skinny population too (much like any country)

Their ignorance is their worst trait. Like how so many seem to think that their army won WWII all by their onesies for example, or how they still believe that their army really kicks asss, when they have never won a war on their own. They lost Vietnam, are losing in Iraq, and couldn't even invade a small Island like Cuba. But like I said, ignorance. Not all Americans are like this however. It just seems like the higher the level of ignorance, the more they run their mouths off. I do know a lot of 'Yanks' that are just as intelligent and well informed as anybody you'll find anywhere else in the world, and they are horrified by what is happening in their country. I have a lot of sympathy for them.
A lousy education system full of propaganda is to blame.

I didn't vote for Bush. He actually lost the popular vote in 2000.
Anyway, we are stuck with him for the next year and change so get used to it.
All Americans aren't imbeciles, many of them are, but not all. Don't judge us from our President.

they think big is beautiful ,wonder why the rest of the world doesn't change to the American Way,forget that they are a relative young Nation compared to many in the world, don't like being criticised, destroyed much of their culture by decimating the indigenous tribes, think they won WW2 ,got a poor sense of humour judging by their TV,and they tend to forget that good old USA was populated by the dregs of many countries seeking a better life.
