I'll be starting maternity leave in about 8 weeks or less. I'll be taking about 10 weeks off. We'll be okay financially but it will be tight. Does anyone know of any financial resources for maternity leave? We don't qualify for any type of government assistance so that counts Family First and W.I.C. out. Also, does anyone know where I can get free samples of formula, diapers, etc? Thanks!

You get disability when you go on maternity leave .. that's what I've been told! (here in california) they go by the last 4 quarters (every 3 months is one quarter) and out of each of those quarters they see which quarter you made the most and they give you 75% of that amount for 12 weeks. I've heard it's 6 weeks before the baby is born .. and 6 weeks after the baby is born .. and if you have a c-section ... they give you an extra 2 weeks after the baby is born.
My sister in law just had a baby in september and thats what she did .. her husband makes 100,000.00 a year .. so they didn't qualify for any assistance either .. but that maternity leave money is something you've paid into (no matter how long you've worked) and you are entitled to it!
Call social security and ask them what department to contact for maternity leave.

good luck! God bless!

You should qualify for disability, even if you only work part time. It is only 1/2 of your salary, but it is better than nothing. 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for a c-section. Talk to your employer first and then if you qualify, have your doc fill out the paperwork. It takes awhile to process so start now. And work up until the very last minute.

Do either you or your husband have any short term disablility insurance? That's usually about the one financial help available to a family in your situation (I've been there).

As for formula and diaper samples if you and your family members (parents, in-laws, grandparents) go to the pampers or similac website and sign up for their news letter they will usually send you samples or atleast coupons for their products. Have you had your baby shower yet? Ask a few people to include a pack of diapers or a pack of wipes or a can of formula in your gift. I did this with my oldest and didn't have to buy diapers for the first 6 months.

Go online to every baby product manufacturer you can find and register on their site for their newsletters and even regular mailings. Make sure to visit Huggies, Pampers, Luvs, Walmart, Target and Babies R Us. We were in teh same boat, financially, in that we couldn't qualify for financial aide. One thing that I did: After my son was born, the county health department called the house and asked if we were interested in a FREE program where a nurse would come to the house to help with nursing, developmental assessments, questions about safety, growth, all kinds of things. I got lots of great opportunities through that program. They even help us pay for early childhood education programs. You may want to call your county department and see if they have a similar program.
