Everything great gets its start somewhere. Looking back on the enormous popularity of the 007 franchise, one must choose the paradigm: On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

"Die Another Day."..In that movie, James Bond actually gets caught, imprisoned, and tortured for a long period of time. He eventually got freed from the North Korean prison, but only because MI6 cut a deal with the Koreans.
It showed us that 007 is not an invinsible man who could cheat his way out of any trouble. He is indeed a human being who can experience pain and suffering.

I like "For Your Eyes Only". The keel hauling scene is great. Carol Bouquet was lovely. Moore was aging badly at this point and I wish they had played up to that more instead of having Lynn Holly Johnson fall for him. It just seemed ridiculous and a bit sad. I wish he had gone after her and she said "Yuck! Get lost Grandpa!"
And it kept it's feet on the ground nicely. Nothing was over the top. The action scenes where all believable. Most of it done with stunts and not special effects. Which was something I liked a lot about the newest one.
One of the better theme songs too.

I am surprised by some of the answers given, but everything is subjective. That having been said, nothing compares to Goldfinger, with the possible exception of From Russia With Love.
