well, early alanis had that edge that janis had, ya know? in all honesty i think alanis is a deeper musician, but she couldn't ever hit the way janis did. it was gutteral! also, that voice WILL NEVER be replicated. janis joplin's singing was just so unique and powerful - the impressive thing was that she did it day in and day out. you'd think it'd be gone after one tune!
also, they are both products of their times. janis was rocking when blues rock was a big, big deal, so she was just a blues singer on that kind of stuff. alanis, well:
alanis came out when there was much, much more diversity in pop music (i'm thinking 10 year spans here). Nirvana and Pearl Jam got radio play as much as sara mclachlan in that stretch. there was no pop diversity in janis' time. who knows what would have been if there were! maybe SHE would have recorded with flea and dave navarro, too!

None! At least Janis Joplin did some very memorable songs. Wasn't crazy about some of her stuff but as for Alanis..her voice is like fingernails on a blackboard and has no talent whatsoever.
