How do car rental places know that you have gone out of state? They always charge some extra fee if you leave the state. How do they know that you are not just traveling around a large state like Texas?

Some will put a GPS in the car.

You can travel out of state with lots of car rentals, just ask if they allow it. You can also get a car with unlimited mileage contract.

They don't....unless you have a wreck, break down, or otherwise run into a problem with their car. Actually, just tell them where you're going, and insist that no extra charges be applied - I NEVER get charged for driving out of state. I also negotiate for unlimited mileage.
