The Aztecs used cacao beans (from which cocoa is derived), and for larger purchases, they used standardized lengths of cotton cloth called quachtli. Depending on the grade of the cotton, the quachtli could be equivalent to 65 to 300 cacao beans (much like our $1 to $100 paper currency).
