I lived in Quebec for over 20 years and now live in New-Brunswick, but i believe its simply because there are so many different cultures in Quebec as opposed to the rest of Canada. Vancouver has Chinese, Toronto have many Chinese also and others, but from experience Quebec has them all, and it's quite a rough city, well it was anyway. You got china town, italian in the northern part of Montreal, jews, arabs, etc...But to be very honest, i have friends that are Libanese, Maroccan, Portugese and even an Algerian and they are the best people ever. I've seen many more issues with french Quebecers than any other culture. I think that ignorance is the main reason.
Even though i am french, i still feel this way. I moved to N-B to get away from it all, the stress, the traffic the police at every street corner...... Here i got the beach, fundy bay and lots of tourist attractions and no HUMIDEX in the summertime, very little anyway!! the good life!!

French Quebecians see the hijab as slave apparel forced upon women along with walking 10 feet behind their man, getting roughed up occasionally, not allowed schooling, not allowed to drive alone, etc, etc.

Brits loaded many of their ancestor French on ships and dropped them in New Orleans to become Acadians or "Cajuns".
That was not freedom either.
But that was a long time ago...fogetaboutit! As the Sopranos would say...

I live just on the border of Québec and Ontario. I really don't agree with Québec's standards. I think it's to "preserve their french culture". They're not just intolerant towards hijabs, but anything that isn't french. For example.. Every sign over there is in french, but everything else in Canada needs to be French and English.

these really are 2 separate things. your first question though has to do with geography. French Canadan is surrounded by english speaking people. naturally you would feel threatned in the survival of your culture and roots.

as far as the hijab goes.. I think this sort of stuff could happen anywhere. peace!
